Richard Neutra-designed stilt house looms over the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles

The landmarked property—originally built in 1892 for a professor who taught at Occidental College—comes with a facade made of riverbed stone and an interior filled with original woodwork. Both the structure and a streetside retaining wall were designated Cultural Monument #373 by the City of Los Angeles in 1988. Lummis purchased the three-acre lot (1.2 ha) sometime between 1895 and 1897 and named it "El Alisal" in tribute to the thicket of alder and sycamore trees that grew in the arroyo. The exhibition hall has a concrete floor so that after a party that might include artists, writers and musicians, it could easily be cleaned with a bucket of water.

Offering a rich history of mid-century modern architecture in the 1960s, the gravity-defying homes feature sweeping views of the San Fernando Valley. “There's no mistake where we're highlighting the city of Los Angeles in the background, and people are coming for this immersive experience where they can come and feel what it's like to be part of this Hollywood lifestyle for a minute. With the house having this incredible pedigree, all of the incredible shots that have happened here, the events that have happened here” says Spencer.

Although Occidental College relocated to the nearby Eagle Rock neighborhood in 1912, a series of landmarked homes, including this one, are part of an area originally known as Professors’ Row. The home’s unique facade is inlaid with stones collected from the Arroyo Seco River, which connects with the larger Salinas River in the central valley of California. Historical records indicate at least two additions have been added since the home’s construction, including a wood-clad, two-story section along the back. Across 21,000 square feet are eight bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, a two-story foyer and formal living and dining areas. Terraces and patios overlook the grounds, where rolling lawns surround a pool and putting green. The current (and second) owner of the home is entrepreneur James F. Goldstein.

I enjoyed visiting this spot as it had a lot of history I knew nothing about, and it was really well preserved. If you are heading through the area, then you should add it to your list to visit if it is open. Also, be sure to go to Galco’s Old World Grocery and the Southwest Museum while there. If it is open, you can also head into the bedroom that has a unique fireplace with small heads along the top of it. But after disagreements between Neutra and the developer, the legendary Austrian-American architect withdrew from the project and the houses were completed by architect William S. Beckett.

The Historical Society was concerned about the city's expectations that a tenant would invest in the house without committing to a long-term lease.[3] The Historical Society of Southern California left the Lummis House in January 2015. The Lummis House is now operated by the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department. The updated kitchen features a large central island, soapstone countertops, and plenty of windows. Located between Mt. Washington and Highland Park in Los Angeles, California, this landmarked structure features an original facade made of riverbed stones collected from the Arroyo Seco tributary in central California.

The place we’re referring to is known as Greystone Mansion or Doheny Mansion, and it’s located at 905 Loma Vista Drive in Beverly Hills. The Tudor Revival mansion was originally completed in 1928, after three years’ worth of construction and a total cost of over $4 million — an insane amount at the time. While he resided in this house, he entertained many notable people include John Muir in the guest house. During that time, he became a huge proponent for Native American history. He did lots to establish the preservation of many artifacts in what became the Southwest Museum, the oldest museum in LA.

The land was actually a wedding gift from oil tycoon Edward Doheny to his son, Edward ‘Ned’ Doheny, and his new wife, Lucy Smith. The name of this Los Angeles mansion might not sound familiar, but you’ve surely seen it before, as it’s one of the most sought-after filming locations in Hollywood. Our flagship location is led by Cristina Ciceri, who has been part of the Pacific Shore Stones family since its beginning and has a background specific to the stone industry. Driving up Highway 110 to Pasadena, you will want to get off at Ave 43 and head to the left. There are signs for the house since it is a place of historical interest.

The drought-tolerant and California native plants predominate in the gardens and natural landscape around the residence, including namesake El Alisal California Sycamore trees. The Arroyo Stone House, located at 4939 Sycamore Terrace in Los Angeles, California, is currently listed for $1,245,000 by Edith Reyna and Liz Johnson of Compass. Outdoor spaces run along the side of the home and connect with the front yard.

Before joining The Times as an intern in 2017, he wrote for the Columbia Missourian and Politico Europe. Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency, Tomer Fridman of Compass and Jade Mills of Coldwell Banker Realty held the listing. Unfortunately, Ned Doheny didn’t get to enjoy his new home for too long. Just four months after moving into Greystone Mansion, Doheny was found dead in the house, alongside his secretary and friend, Hugh Plunkett. The case was ruled a murder-suicide, however, some claim that there’s more to that story.

Yet the windowed walls, extreme opulence of the views along with the minimalist vibes and custom furniture pieces feel surprisingly of the present moment. A look at one of the two upstairs bedrooms—each of which has numerous windows. The stone courtyard area along with our unique fireplace and private vineyard provide the perfect backdrop to experience The Stonehaus offerings. Whether you feel like meandering through our vineyard, sitting by the outdoor stone fireplace or playing bocce ball, we are convinced you will enjoy and savor every moment. The collaborative pair, who she notes don’t have the same taste, but “have a blast together,” started redoing Stone’s guesthouse and pool as a side project, but quickly moved on to a full makeover of the main residence, a process that would take four years. A terracotta-hued walkway leads right to the front gate, which features a warm-white facade, a pastel green gate, and matching shutters.

The large, glass-paned front door opens into an attractive foyer with a curved staircase and polished-wood floors. Set on a gorgeous, tree-lined block, the picture-perfect and newly renovated pad boasts a light-filled layout with four bedrooms and four bathrooms across 3,276 square feet. The property features hand-carved oak banisters, balustrades and rafters, seven chimneys, each designed by a different artist, a movie theater room, a billiard room, a hidden bar, and a two-lane original Brunswick bowling alley. The alley was renovated so that it could be used by the filming crew for There Will Be Blood. The mansion continues to be used as a filming location and a destination for special events such as music festivals, fundraisers, and even weddings.

All of our locations remain open as essential business while taking enhanced safety and sanitary precautions. We know that Stone has never played a chef, but we only imagine she flexed her culinary muscle in this sweet, eat-in kitchen. The surplus of drawers and cabinet are practically begging to be filled with cookware and non-perishables. Meanwhile, the blue oven and scalloped hood serve up a design moment that's downright delicious.
